Peace Like a River is attainable with this skill

One way to attain peace is through practicing mindfulness. What is mindfulness? Great question, mindfulness is paying attention to something specific. For example; while thoughts arise, paying attention to the breath is mindfulness of the breath.

What does this mindfulness of thoughts mean then? It’s about acknowledging the sensation accompanying those thoughts and going back to the original thought repeatedly. The attention is on the thoughts, here. This Mindfulness of thoughts exercise allows peace because of distance from your thoughts. When you acknowledge and put a name to a word, it strips the fear out of it, removing the unknown, giving you peace like a river!

To practice mindfulness of thoughts, you will:

  • pay attention to your thought without judging it
  • feel the sensation that comes with the thought, rather than run from it
  • go back to the thought
  • do steps 2 & 3 repeatedly until you feel mental separation
