Woodstock Weekend Trip: About A Summer Arts Colony

Woodstock Festival actually was in Bethel, NY.  The festival took its name from Woodstock, NY, which still has a reputation as a summer art colony. In the 1970s, Woodstock town dwellers began a series of Sound Out stage events featuring folk and rock bands symbolic of the changing times. When Woodstock Festival organizers hosted their four-day music festival in Bethel, they borrowed the name "Woodstock" to play off of the counterculture art vibe that Woodstock later became known for.

Must-see locations in or near Woodstock are:

  • Tinker Street, Town of Woodstock
  • The Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Buddhist monastery in Woodstock.
  • Ashokan Reservoir (30+ mile walk)

Pros

-Tinker Street is lined with its local mom-and-pop shops and eateries. Can be explored in two hours.

-All are enjoyed in summer weather.

-Reserve for events at the temple at https://kagyu.org.

-Prayer requests for deceased or sick relatives are made for a small donation.

-Listening to meditations performed by the monks is public, free, and very calming.

-The Reservoir supplies all of NYC's water.  It is serene and picturesque. The water is clear and pristine and no one is allowed in it.  As you walk around it, you can see all the way through to the bottom.

This weekend trip/ mini-vacation is accessible to you from NYC by zip car or a friend with a car. You can do two of the activities above and spend a day and come back home. No flight fees or hotels needed. Just have fun.
